    Why does stainless steel change color at high temperatures?

    1. Causes of high temperature discoloration of stainless steel
    The high temperature resistance of stainless steel should be very excellent, but when stainless steel faces certain high-temperature environments, such as ovens or high-temperature flue gas, discoloration may occur. This discoloration is mainly caused by the following reasons:
    1. Oxidation
    At high temperatures, the interaction between stainless steel and oxygen molecules in the air will cause oxidation. That is, an oxide film will be produced on the surface of stainless steel, usually in a dull gray, black or dark blue color. This oxide film has certain corrosion resistance, but it will also affect the appearance.
    2. Color imbalance
    The color of stainless steel is closely related to its chemical composition, among which elements such as nickel, chromium, manganese, and molybdenum will affect the color stability of stainless steel. In high-temperature environments, these elements can become imbalanced, causing color shifts or discoloration on the stainless steel surface.
    3. Welding thermal deformation
    At high temperatures, the thermal expansion rates of various parts of stainless steel are different. If the temperature is not well controlled during the welding process or the processing technology is improper, it will cause some deformation problems, such as bending or warping, thus affecting the color and performance of its surface.
    2. Preventive measures against high temperature discoloration of stainless steel
    In order to avoid the discoloration of stainless steel at high temperatures, the following preventive measures can be taken:
    1. Choose the right stainless steel material
    In high temperature environments, stainless steel materials that are more resistant to high temperatures should be selected. Generally speaking, 316L or 904L stainless steel are more suitable for use in high temperature environments. They have high corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance.
    2. Control processing technology
    During the manufacturing process, the processing temperature and welding process should be controlled to avoid excessive thermal deformation of stainless steel as much as possible to ensure the color and performance of its surface.
    3. Add antioxidants
    During use, some antioxidants, such as nitrogen or hydrogen, can be added to the high temperature environment. These antioxidants can effectively reduce the occurrence of oxidation reactions and protect the color and performance of the stainless steel surface.
